Shungite Care & Maintenance: How to Clean Genuine Shungite

Does Shungite Need to Be Cleaned? Practical Care & Maintenance

As a family-owned business sourcing authentic Karelian Shungite since 2006, we frequently get asked how to properly care for these unique, carbon-rich stones.

Because our authentic Shungite is a natural solid mineral material and not a synthetic or pressed-powder imitation, it requires very little maintenance. However, regular handling and environmental exposure mean your pieces will occasionally benefit from simple, practical care to look their best.

Shungite Collects Residue

Because Shungite has a high natural carbon content and features either a naturally matte or artisan-polished finish, its surface easily interacts with its surroundings. Over time, you may notice your pieces collect:

  • Ambient dust from home offices or tech setups.
  • Natural skin oils transferred during regular handling of jewelry and pocket stones.
  • Natural carbon residue: Raw or newly carved Shungite can sometimes leave a faint black smudge on your hands or clothing when first unpacked. This is a completely normal, healthy characteristic of genuine, untreated carbon-rich Shungite stones.

A light cleaning is occasionally helpful simply to maintain the stone's appearance and prevent household dust from building up on the hand carved shapes.

Practical Cleaning Methods

Because Shungite is a relatively soft mineral material (due to its high carbon content), never use harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive detergents, or ultrasonic jewelry machines, as these can permanently strip or dull the natural finish. Stick to these safe, physical care methods instead:

1. The Clean Water Rinse (Best for Large Decor & Carvings)

For solid geometric pieces like pyramids, spheres, cubes, and raw display stones, clean water is the safest option.

  • Rinse the stone gently under lukewarm, clean water.
  • If necessary to remove oils, use a single drop of mild, fragrance-free soap.
  • Wipe the surface gently with a soft microfiber cloth.
  • Pat completely dry immediately. Do not leave carved stones soaking in standing water for extended periods.

2. The Microfiber Wipe (Best for Cell Phone Tabs & Jewelry)

If your Shungite is attached to an electronic device with adhesive, or if it features delicate jewelry findings (like metal clasps, cords, or elastic strings), avoid liquids entirely.

  • Use a completely dry, clean microfiber cloth.
  • Buff the surface of the stone in small, circular motions to lift away fingerprints and oils.
  • For phone tabs, a dry wipe ensures you do not compromise the adhesive backing holding it to your phone case.

3. Short Air & Indirect Light Exposure

If you wish to refresh your pieces, placing them near an open window for 10–15 minutes of fresh air and indirect light is an excellent, non-contact method. Avoid leaving dark Shungite pieces in intense, direct peak-summer sunlight for hours, as the dark material absorbs heat rapidly and can become hot to the touch.

Long-Term Material Care

Authentic Karelian Shungite has survived for billions of years in the earth, and with minimal care, your artisan pieces will last a lifetime. If a piece ever looks slightly dull or loses its luster from room dust, a quick 30-second wipe with a dry cloth is usually all it takes to restore its natural appearance.
