There is a lot in a name.

Since the 1940s, people exposed to wireless radiation have developed symptoms of dis-ease in their bodies. Over the decades, many different names have been used to identify these symptoms arising from exposure to wireless radiation.

Well, as of 2025, there is going to be just one name for these symptoms. And that name is EMR Syndrome.

Many Names for EMR Syndrome

Prior to this name change, EMR Syndrome was called many different things.

In the 1940s, it was known as Microwave Syndrome. This term was coined by the Russians to identify a group of symptoms of illness that radar workers who were being exposed to wireless radiation on the job were experiencing.

As time went on, and wireless radiation began to be used for everyday communication, ordinary people began experiencing adverse symptoms in their bodies when exposed to these fields on a regular basis.

As these people did not necessarily work around wireless radiation, they were labeled as “sensitives”. Hence the name Electrical Sensitivity found its way into the medical lexicon.

Different variations on this term began to be used. Electrohypersensitivity, Electrosensitivity, Electromagnetic Sensitivity, Microwave Radiation Sickness and even Havana Syndrome.

Havana Syndrome

Havana Syndrome was a term coined in 2016 to describe a series of symptoms that US diplomats working out of the US Embassy in Havana, Cuba began experiencing.

At first, the symptoms experienced by these US diplomats were considered to be a form of mass-hysteria or psychosomatic.

Further research into the situation showed that these symptoms were being caused by EMF Weapons.

OneName Project

As the name suggests, the OneName Project is all about giving this new syndrome one name.

The OneName Project brought together people living with wireless radiation sickness, leading wireless radiation experts, safe technology advocates and medical professionals to choose a single, unifying, non-stigmatizing term for illness caused by exposure to wireless radiation and electromagnetic fields.”

According to the OneName Project, using the term “sensitivity” to describe this syndrome is stigmatizing. It infers that the problem is with the individual being overly sensitive, rather than with the facts regarding the hazards of wireless radiation exposure.

These professionals also felt the terms microwave and Havana were too confusing, making people think of microwave ovens and Cuba.

They feel the name EMR Syndrome does a good job of focusing attention on the toxicity of man-made electromagnetic radiation.

Invisible Toxin

When we talk about artificial electromagnetic fields, we are really talking about an invisible toxin. You can’t see EMFs or feel them, but they are very real.

According to science, electromagnetic energy is one of the main four forces of physics recognized. Strong and weak nuclear forces, and gravity are the other three.

Mainstream science likes to point out the the sun and the moon emit electromagnetic fields, as does the earth. Their argument being that maybe people are being adversely affected by these EMFs more than the man-made EMFs.

The flaw in that theory is that natural EMFs resonate in a manner that strengthens biological life. They are compatible with our biology. Whereas man-made, artificial EMFs are not.

21st-Century Health Crisis

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), a syndrome is “a set of symptoms or conditions that occur together”. With its new name, EMR Syndrome is now becoming known as a legitimate medical syndrome, just like Chronic Fatique Syndrome.

According to the press release put out by the OneName Project:

EMR Syndrome is a new unifying name for a 21st-century health crisis. Millions of people experience physical symptoms — including headaches, insomnia, heart palpitations and more — when exposed to electromagnetic radiation (EMR). But until now, it’s been difficult for these individuals to advocate for themselves and educate others because there’s been no single, easily understandable term for the condition.

Global Recognition

To date, the health effects of EMF exposure have been formally recognized by some European governments. The UK has referred to is as an EMF Disability and some other European governments have acknowledged it as an EMF Sensitivity.

The OneName Project hopes their new name will become formally recognized on a global scale.

“The people who have EMR Syndrome and their allies are now working to ensure that EMR Syndrome is formally recognized by global organizations, such as the World Health Organization, according to the press release.”

EMF Conversation Just Got Easier

GrowingHealing.com has been writing about EMF Pollution and the need for EMF Protection since 2006. (We were named EMFBlues.com up until 2023.)

It has been a challenge to find terms that were understood by people and also recognized by authorities when referring to the adverse health effects caused by exposure to EMF fields.

Ruth F. Moss is the director of SafeTech Westchester in New York. She suffers from EMR Syndrome. After she was diagnosed as having an EMR-related illness in 2015, she asked to be told the name of her illness. But, there really wasn’t one.

According to Moss, who has a background in marketing:

“No one is going to remember a health condition if it’s called 10 different things. People need one name that they can recognize and remember. It’s the way our brains work.”

-Ruth f. moss director of safetech westchester, NY

We fully support the new, official name of EMR Syndrome and the unification it will surely bring to those experiencing symptoms and seeking relief, as well as those medical professionals and healthcare providers who treat people looking for help.

And it sure makes writing about EMF-related illness easier, as we now can all agree on what to call it.
