Shungite Properties
Shungite is a rare, carbon-based, ancient stone found in Shunga, a village in Karelia, Russia.
The stone has a unique composition and is one of the few substances found on earth to contain Fullerenes.
Fullerenes are 3-D spherical molecules made of carbon atoms. These molecules are hollow and sometimes called buckyballs.
Fullerenes are a pretty recent discovery. The scientists who discovered Fullerenes were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996.
The true origin of Shungite is a mystery. Most carbon comes from decayed organic matter. However, Shungite stone is thought to be at least 2 billion years old. As this was before organic matter existed on the earth, it is not known where the Carbon contained in Shungite originated from.
While not proven, many scientists believe that Shungite was deposited from a meteorite that hit the earth 2 billion years ago, and that the Carbon came from space.
Although scientists are unsure of how Shungite was formed or where it came from, they attribute the stone’s many benefits to its high Carbon and high Fullerene content.
